Now is a great time to be a man. Doctors have been treating menopause, and practicing anti-aging medicine for women, for several decades.
Only recently have aging men received medical attention for age-related declines in testosterone. Phrases such as “Andropause” and “male menopause” have started creeping into our society’s shared medical language.
Still, despite an increase in awareness related to testosterone levels and the male aging process, many men aren’t yet aware of the diverse treatment options available to them. What’s more – many physicians are also not aware of advances in medicine and science (link to mayo clinic study), in relation to testosterone therapy options.
Great news for guys
Men seeking a boost in testosterone levels have several options these days, varying greatly in cost and effectiveness. The first approach to treating low T is to hit the local retail supplement store. Fancy packages and pill bottles locked behind plastic cases give an impression of very important products – but most of these items won’t move the testosterone needle to any noticeable, sustainable degree.
However, these retailers do carry an androgen called DHEA – a powerful little pill that converts to testosterone in the body. Men over 40 benefit from DHEA, without any doubt.
Primary care physicians or Family Doctors are fantastic at what they do. However, the vast majority of primary care doctors don’t have an in-depth understanding of hormone therapy. These doctors also typically judge a man’s testosterone level based on a chart: If a man is at the low end of a chart, he’s still on the chart. A doctor reads “normal,” and doesn’t even bring up the testosterone topic with the patient.
If the patient brings up the topic of testosterone, some family physicians will (often grudgingly) write a script for a testosterone cream. The effectiveness of topical test creams for men is debatable, and the potency is mild at best in terms of elevating testosterone levels in the blood.
Getting warmer: Endocrinologists
Endocrinologists are specialists in regulating hormone levels in the body. At Affinity, we get a fair amount of patients who have experienced some success being treated for low T by an endocrinologist. The surprising thing to our clinical staff is the incomplete picture these doctors often seem to paint.
For example, we’ve seen endocrinologists prescribe testosterone injections every other week. Those injections can cause a fluctuation in hormone levels, which can be harmful to the patient. The rise and fall in hormone levels is due to the half-life of Testosterone Cypionate, which is roughly 7-10 days.
Our patients also report they are not prescribed the important ancillary products for a Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) program, such as an estrogen blocker or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG). HCG keeps natural testosterone production on track during the course of TRT, and is an important player in the overall male health picture.
The Winner: Hormone Replacement Therapy Clinics
A surprising number of our male patients have gone through the entire gamut of testosterone therapy choices, before arriving at our door. While we are glad they made it to us, we share their frustration in the long, needlessly drawn out journey.
A hormone replacement therapy clinic such as Affinity Whole Health takes a holistic, big-picture approach to patient care. A hormone replacement therapy clinic such as Affinity Whole Health takes a holistic, big-picture approach to patient care. The focus is not only on your testosterone levels and other key hormones in your body, but also what your symptoms are and how do you feel.
What are your personal health goals, and how do you want to feel?
Hormone replacement clinics specializing in TRT will prescribe patients the most advanced treatments possible. Most male patients at Affinity receive testosterone injections weekly – done either at home, or in the office by patient request. Just as importantly, patients receive critical ancillary products such as estrogen blockers, and HCG.
Regular lab work and doctor consultations ensure the patient is healthy, progressing, and getting the most from their TRT. A patient on a proper TRT program will undergo radical life changes. Energy levels will skyrocket, as their confidence and mood improves. Sleep and sex drive get better almost instantly, and muscle is added quickly, while body fat melts off with little effort.
